When I was just a child I can tenderly hark back to sitting on an antique barber chair at the local barber shop and observing my dad receiving a haircut and shave. It is nothing like what it is in the present day. There was an skill to it. The barber really cared about what he was doing and it was apparent that my father loved it. Not only that, but the barber shop was where men could socialize with themselves.
The haircuts were always so meticulous. My dad would be sitting in one of the numerous used barber chairs while the barber would purposely take his time to provide the perfect cut. Most men kept their hair short as that was the manner back then. After the hair cut was a shave. This wasn't a shave as we see today, with foam from a can and a synthetic disposable razor. Instead, the lather was put on with a badger brush and a straight razor was employed. It appears scary, but it is the smoothest shave you can ever obtain. After the shave was the hot towel that always felt so enjoyable.
The men would principally argue about sports or politics, though the matter of women would come up often. It was a time to relax and get to know each of us a little better. Now, when you get a haircut the chatting is kept to a minimum and you commonly try to get out as soon as you can.
As I stroll by the local barber shop and see the sign indicating barber chairs for sale, I wonder why this custom has mostly disappeared from our society. Do people not value a proper hair cut and shave anymore? Have we all become so anti-social that spending an afternoon socializing with our pals and neighbors seems like a chore? While I am not one to be bitter and only long for for "how things were", I do wish that people will think of and value the way it was just a couple decades ago.
