Kennel Training For New Puppies
Puppy Kennel Training, most often described as Crate Training, is the best way to start out with house training the new puppy you have just got as a pet. 'Kennel' may be referred to as 'Crate' and 'Kennel Training' could be referred to as 'Crate Training' through out this article.
There are other advantages to a dog crate, other than just house training puppies. When restricted in a crate the pup cannot do any mischief and get hurt. Think of how, your costly shoes will not be chewed up. Crate training, if done the proper way, will also provide you with a secure 'den' where your pet will always be safe.
To a dog out in the wild, it's den is the only place it feels safe in, it seeks safety in, it retreats to, to relax. The rationale of dog kennel training is to imagine the crate to be the den it would have sought out, had it been a doggie in the wild..
To meet this end, the measurement of the crate, its structure, and the materials used in its manufacture, are very important along with, the essential rule, that the crate cannot be used to punish the canine in any form or manner what so ever. The dog from day one should trust the crate and not fear it.
The crate should be bought before you bring the new puppy home for the first time. Choose a size that would not permit the dog to move freely around and about or stand up on its hind legs. Many knowledgeable trainers say that the crate should fit as mentioned above, for all ages of the dog. This would mean that a new crate should be bought every two or three months, till the dog is fully grown. It advisable to buy a crate that made for a full grown dog of its breed, but partition it to suit the puppy's present size, adjusting the partition as the puppy grows, till the partition is not needed at all.
It must be appreciated that a dog will never go to the bathroom in its sleeping quarters, hence the measurement of the crate should permit for enough resting space only, if the crate is going to be used to house train and potty train the pup successfully.
When starting the dog kennel training, it is of maximum importance that the dog enters it by itself and not forced into it, or physically placed into it. It must walk into it. Use a few choice treats within the crate to lure him or her in to begin with. A comfortable puppy blanket and a couple of chew toys should make the crate an attractive proposition, and a cool place to hang out in.
As always, rewards go a long way. The moment the pup has entered the crate for the first time put in some more treats and add some verbal praise to make the dog aware that you are happy when it goes in there. Give the puppy the chance and freedom to get out of the crate, and get back into it at least a few times before you close it for the first time.
After closing it shut it for the first time, reopen it after a number of minutes. Repeat the act of closing and opening the crate door a couple of times, but lengthen the time it has been closed shut each time. Make certain that you are always within the puppy's sight. It should believe it is still a part of the happenings around it, even though it is restricted in the crate.
It is natural that the pup will start whining the first time you close the crate. You should never open the crate or speak to the puppy on account of the howling. Letting out the puppy for bathroom breaks have to be scheduled according to its age. The breaks would be more often in younger pups. An hour for a puppy that is just a month old.
Use one hour for a month of age, so if the puppy is 3 months old, you can without any worries confine him for for as long as three hours before his next potty break, but that is only an estimate, you would have to monitor the disposition of the doggy when it is in the crate to ensure that it is not experiencing any problems on the account of a full bladder.
Puppy crate training is a must in the training program of every puppy. It makes potty training very easy and keeps your possessions safe from sharp little teeth bettering your chances of having a pet that is allowed in your household.
